Last night, the Portland city council voted unanimously to ban the display of "wild and exotic animals."

According to the Portland Press Herald, the ban pertains to elephants, lions, tigers, and a wide range of other animals often seen in circuses.

While Portland is the first city in Maine to enact a ban such as this, over a hundred other municipalities nationwide have adopted similar measures.

The bill was proposed due to the “draconian training that can be cruel and inhuman” toward the animals.
