Portland Police Department Updates Tattoo Rules For Officers
It's not too often you see cops with tattoos. Most departments have rules prohibiting an officer's tattoos from being on display while they are in uniform.
But that's about to change in Portland.
According to WMTW, the Portland Police Department are revising their long-standing policy, which will now allow members of the Portland PD more flexibility.
Although they're loosening up the rules quite a bit here, there are still a few restrictions. Face, neck and hand tattoos, with the exception of a ring on each hand, will still be prohibited. And ultimately, the Chief will have the final say on what is and isn't allowed.
The policy change is motivated by the department' s desire to "reach a new group of highly qualified applicants."
I think this is a good move for the department. While tattoos may have been considered taboo at some point in time, they have become very mainstream as of late, and are now seen as a form of expression for people of all class and character.
