Southern Maine Community College is Maine's largest and oldest community college. It opened in 1946 in Augusta under the name Maine Vocational Technical Institute as a day school for WWII veterans who needed to learn new skills after the war, according to the Wikipedia page. The school says it charges among the lowest tuition and fees in New England, and offers more than 40 degree programs. It wasn't until 2003 and after a few name changes that the school became SMCC.

Now MaineBiz.biz is reporting that throughout the month of June, SMCC will waive their application fee for those people applying for the upcoming fall semester which begins August 26th. According to the article, it's SMCC's way of making college as affordable as possible and keeping costs down.

Students who wish to take advantage of this offer are encouraged to apply online, by mail, or in person at their campuses either in South Portland or Brunswick Monday through Friday between 8am and 5pm.
