New Hampshire is one of the original 13 colonies of the colonial United States, so is it surprising to find out the Granite State is also one of the most patriotic states in our nation?  No, it's absolutely not surprising at all.

How do you rank states by patriotism?  There is so much to consider, but one financial company studies habits of Americans on a regular basis.

This study looked at what makes a state a good patriotic state, and what are the points of a being a patriot, which really matter.

The key findings are based on 13 indicators of key patriotic element, pared down to two main points: military engagement and civic engagement.

Military Engagement

Military engagement looks at how many residents of each state actually enlisted in the military between 2015 – 2020, and how many residents are veterans, on active-duty, or in military reserves.

Civic Engagement

Civic engagement includes residents who voted in the last presidential election, and in primary elections.  The study also looks at how many residents of each state volunteer, how many are in Peace Corps and AmeriCorps, how many have participated in jury duty, group, or civic organizations, and finally, the U.S. history & civics education requirements for schools in each state.

While New Hampshire did well in all of these areas, it was the U.S. History and Civic Education requirement which made this state shine.

Our neighboring state of Maine also did well, while Massachusetts and Rhode Island, also two of the original 13 colonies, ranked near the bottom.
