What’s in a Last Name? Here’s the Most Common Surname in Maine
Is it still Smith? Brown? Johnson?
Most common surnames across the country are pretty consistent, but there is the occasional regional difference. My name, Miller, makes the top 3 in West Virginia, Pennsylvania, Ohio, and Indiana. All states close to each other. And it's also top 3 in Wyoming, Nebraska and Kansas, again states that border each other. Then it's also in the top 3 in Oregon. Go figure.
From the map of the U.S.A. here, you'll see we are changing as a country. Look at Texas with Garcia and Martinez in the top 3. And in New Mexico it's Martinez, Garcia and Chavez as the top 3. California's top 3 are Garcia, Hernandez, and Lopez. And in Hawaii top 3 are Lee, Wong and Kim.
You'll find lots of Andersons and Williams all over America. But yes in Maine, once again it's Smith, Brown and Johnson.
I've got Carrie Underwood's song stuck in my head. "And I don't even know his last name."
The last word. What's in a name? That which we call a rose by any other name would smell as sweet. Quote William Shakespeare from Romeo and Juliet circa 1600.
