Back in the '90s and early '00s, haunted houses in rural New England were pretty basic.  A life-size plastic mummy, a creepy soundtrack, and a few costumed characters who tried to get you with jump-scares.

They were fun, but they were never really scary.

Over the last few decades, we have seen haunted houses and haunted attractions become REALLY elaborate.  REALLY elaborate!

Even in Maine, there are some really large, and well-planned, haunted attractions.

In fact, one of the largest, if not the largest, in the state is in Central Maine.

Farmington Fright Fest

Over the last few years, we have seen this haunted attraction grow and become way more intense.

According to the website, this year's attraction is actually three haunts in one.

There's Granny Grimm's House, which the website describes as:

"Enter the twisted world of fairytales and witness the aftermath of your favorite stories. Will Hansel and Gretel survive the witch's evil plan? Will Little Red get her revenge? Will the Prince find his true love? Or will you become the star of the story? The answer is yours to discover in the House of 1000 Candies!"

There's also The Crematorium which, as the name indicates, is a trip through a crematorium!  And, there's Mr. Marbles Maze, which is a maze filled with "evil clowns and twisted carnival attractions."

Farmington Fright Fest, located at the Farmington Fairgrounds, will be open Friday, October 20; Saturday, October 20; Friday, October 27; Saturday, October 28; and Sunday, October 29.

They plan to do a "blackout night" on Sunday, October 29.  All the lights will be out and all you have to light your way is one glowstick!
