Maine is a wonderful place to live for countless reasons.

Among its greatest strengths is the high quality of life it offers. From its stunning scenery and strong sense of community to the friendliness of the people who call it home, Maine stands out as a truly special state, especially in the pushy and snotty northeast. Let's be honest, we’re incredibly fortunate to live and work here.

Further proof of this comes from a recent study analyzing the best places for working moms. And—surprise, surprise—Maine ranks near the top.

WalletHub.com, a financial website, recently published its annual report on the best states for working moms.

Is Maine a Good State for Working Moms?

The Pine Tree State performed well in this year’s report, earning the title of the sixth-best state in the nation for working moms. All Mainers should take a bow—this is definitely a ranking to be proud of.

WalletHub gave Maine a score of 57.49 out of a possible 100 points. The scoring system is based on three major categories: Child Care, Professional Opportunities, and Work-Life Balance. These were further broken down into 17 subcategories to provide as much detail as possible. You can read more about the methodology here.

Maine’s category rankings were especially strong in child care. The Pine Tree State ranked third in the country, just behind Connecticut and Massachusetts. This is a highly encouraging development. The data clearly shows that Maine is making significant progress when it comes to the availability, affordability, and quality of child care and early education.

The state’s second-best ranking came in the Work-Life Balance category, where Maine finished ninth. Let’s be honest: we could all use a better work-life balance, so for Maine to place that high means we’re clearly doing something right.

Professional opportunities for working moms ranked the lowest among the three categories, though Maine still earned a respectable overall ranking of 20th. It’s encouraging to see that the workforce offers a solid number of opportunities for moms to work and advance in their careers.

It probably comes as no surprise to see Maine ranked so highly in this report. The state prides itself on being inclusive in every way, and that certainly includes working moms—a group that plays a vital role in Maine’s economy. Like any other group, working moms contribute significantly to society, so it’s essential to ensure they have every opportunity to succeed.

What are the Best States in New England for Working Moms?

Maine was joined by many of its New England neighbors near the top of WalletHub’s report. In fact, every New England state ranked within the top 16. Here’s how they finished:

1. Massachusetts
2. Connecticut
3. Rhode Island
5. Vermont
16. New Hampshire

That’s a seriously dominant performance by the region, and I’m sure moms across New England appreciate it.
