A fight over who gets custody over a couples dog after a break up is being taken to the Maine Supreme Court.

According to News Center Maine, Jessica Sardina and Kelvin Liriano of Bangor, who were not married, broke up. During the split, there was a dispute over who gets custody of their dog. Sardina decided to take the custody battle all the way to the Maine Supreme Court.

The Chief Justice commented that she didn't think pet custody battles are something that the Maine Supreme Court should be spending their time on, but she heard the case.

Maine State law views pets as property and since Liriano made the decision to adopt the dog and his name is on the papers, the dog is his property.

The Justices will respond to testimony in about a month. In the meantime, the dog will remain with Liriano.
