We've been talking about Maine's bus driver shortage for as long as we can remember. As of late, some Maine school districts have had to suspend some, or in some cases all, of their daily bussing service because they just don't have enough drivers to adequately get the job done. Well, one Maine superintendent is looking to help.

According to WMTW, Oxford Hills school district superintendent, Monica Henson, is preparing get her commercial drivers license and school bus endorsement so that she may drive one of the district's many school buses.

While she is currently studying for the exam to get her permit, she told WMTW that she does have some experience transporting children. As a former camp counselor and basketball coach in Georgia, Henson had a class-D license which she used to transport kids around to different games and activities.

Once she gets her license, Monica will be placed on the standby schedule to be used to take over routes when there is a shortage of drivers or when a driver may be out sick. Hopefully, like Henson, more Mainers will make the move to become licensed to operate school buses so that districts around the state don't have to keep intermittently suspending transportation services.
