Survey Finds Maine Takes the Lead in New England States Contemplating Secession

I find this survey a little disturbing but with the political climate the way it is right now, I guess someone had to ask the question.

YouGov recently polled 35,000 Americans and asked them three questions:

• Would you support your state seceding from the U.S.?
• Is there a state other than your own that you would support seceding from the U.S.?
• To your knowledge, does the U.S. Constitution give states a right to secede?

The question arises after debate over whether or not states have the right to secede. It's an ominous question with a movie opening in April about a near future where the United States breaks out into a second Civil War. It stars Kirsten Dunst, Cailee Spaeny, and Nick Offerman who plays the President of the United States.

The sample size of 35,000 people is pretty small for a nation of 332 million, so take these numbers for what they are. Here's a look at what the responses in each of the New England states were. Vermont numbers were not included as they had less than 100 responses.

Maine

Maine had 19 percent of respondents say they want Maine to secede, 30 percent want another state to secede and 23 percent believe in a right to secession.  Of all the New England States, Maine has the highest number that says that was to secede.

New Hampshire

New Hampshire had 15 percent of respondents say they want to secede, 37 percent want another state to secede and 25 percent believe in a right to secession.

Massachusetts

Massachusetts had 14 percent of respondents say they want to secede, 29 percent want another state to secede and 16 percent believe in a right to secession.

Connecticut

Connecticut had 9 percent of respondents say they want to secede, 21 percent want another state to secede and 13 percent believe in a right to secession. Connecticut is the state with the least amount of people saying they want to secede.

Rhode Island

Rhode Island had 14 percent of respondents say they want to secede, 29 percent want another state to secede and 19 percent believe in a right to secession.

The state that had the most people wanting to secede was Alaska with 36%, followed by Texas and California with 31%.
