Maine State Police K-9 Berry’s Emotional Final Sign-Off Has Thousands Reaching for Tissues

Sometimes a simple radio sign-off can hit harder than anyone expects and you don’t expect tears to run down your face before a 9 am board meeting. But that’s exactly what these videos do.  

And this week, Maine State Police K-9 Berry officially signed off for the final time, marking the end of an extraordinary nine-year career alongside Sergeant Hink.

The heartfelt dispatch message, shared online, quickly captured the attention of thousands across Maine and beyond, reminding us just how much these four-legged officers mean to the communities they serve.

It’s easy to think of police dogs as partners in law enforcement, but K-9s like Berry are so much more than that and it's obvious by the sign off.

They locate missing people when every second counts. They help track dangerous suspects. They remove illegal drugs from our streets. They protect their handlers without hesitation and often put themselves in harm’s way without understanding the risks they’re taking.

According to the retirement post, Berry helped find countless missing people and criminals, while also becoming a beloved ambassador at schools and community events. 

Hearing a dispatcher thank a K-9 for years of service puts everything into perspective. Behind every badge, whether worn by a person or attached to a harness, is a beautiful life dedicated to serving others.

Now, after years of protecting Maine, K-9 Berry’s next assignment is much simpler: car rides, swimming, chasing toys, and enjoying retirement.
