The State of Maine is one step closer to officially recognizing Indigenous Peoples Day rather than Columbus Day on the second Monday of October.

News Center Maine reports that in an 88 to 51 vote, the Maine House approved the bill to make the change. Democratic Representative Benjamin Collings from Portland is the sponsor of the bill that would rename Columbus Day to Indigenous Peoples Day in honor of Native Americans.

The bill now moves on the Maine Senate and if passed, Maine would join Florida, Hawaii, Alaska, Vermont and South Dakota as one of six states that do not recognize Columbus Day. Several Maine communities already observe Indigenous Peoples Day including Brunswick, Belfast and Portland.
