The first day of fall is in T-minus two days.

I know, I was shocked, too, and had to take a triple glance at the calendar. But alas, it is here.

It is now officially time to dive into all things pumpkin spice and everything nice. I’m talking sweaters, pumpkin flavors, apple cider (with a splash of Fireball, anyone?), and county fairs.

To kick off the first week of fall, the 149th Cumberland Fair starts this coming Sunday, September 26, and will go until October 2. As a Greely alumni, this has been an annual routine for me since I can remember and with all the things that change in life, this nostalgic event is a staple piece of home and tradition.

You will notice one addition to the fair this year, and that’s a COVID-19 Vaccine Clinic. On Thursday, Sept. 30, Maine CDC Public Health Nursing will be administering the one-dose J&J vaccine right at the fair for those who still need it and want to safely enjoy the activities that come with fall in Maine.

As for the rest of the festivities, you will recognize old-time favorites like a stage filled all week with local bands, and events like the Ox Pulls, Demolition Derby, Classic Car Show, 4-H Livestock Auction, and many, many others.

A personal favorite of mine is the pig scramble but it comes with a little saltiness incited by my parents who never let me sign up. Who wouldn’t let their daughter chase a greased-up pig through the mud to bring home as a pet?! Rude!

The fair will run for 7 days and will be filled daily with food trucks and entertainment, with classics like sugary homemade lemonade and classic fair-favorite fried dough.

You can check out the very detailed schedule on the fair's website here so you can make sure you don't miss out on your favorite events. I know I am definitely not missing the pig scramble.
