That has changed with all universities charging more and more annually.  Which state schools are the most expensive?  You might be surprised at the findings of a recent survey by

Let's look at the lowest priced in-state school first:

Utah had the lowest average cost out of all states on the list at $16,238. It had a total cost of just $8,067 for annual in-state tuition and required fees. Utah also had the cheapest estimated room fees at $3,961 and the third cheapest board fees at $4,210.

The most expensive state university is in Vermont.  University of Vermont costs $31,810 per year for room, board, and tuition.

The second most expensive was The University of New Hampshire.  Annual fees for tuition, room, and board are $30,398.  The third highest ranking in-state school is University of Connecticut at $30,344, with Rutgers, The State University of New Jersey, ranking fourth at $29,948, and University of Massachusetts at #5 at $29,689 per year. Number six was the University of Rhode Island at $29,058.

In-state tuition, room, and board for the University of Maine was lowest of all New England states at $22,219 annually.

These public universities attract many students, both in and out of state, offering financial aid and scholarships to many.  If you don't have to pay for room and board, then these in-state programs are a great option to keep college costs and loans down.
