Beautiful Maine Island Town Named the State’s Most Underrated Town
A town in Downeast Maine received some great press from a popular travel site.
The website Love Exploring put together a list of the most underrated towns in America. Maine was represented on the list by the town of Stonington.
Found on the southern half of Deer Isle, Stonington is a town of just a little over 1,000 residents. The island community is mostly known for its massive lobster production. It is consistently a top lobster processer in Maine, and one of the largest in the entire country.
However, Stonington is much more than that. It's also a town community right in the heart one of Maine's most beautiful areas. It's not far from both Midcoast Maine and Mount Desert Island.
The town also looks like it's right out of a refence book of what a small Maine island community should look like. It's got beautiful homes pepper the coastline, marine wildlife is prevalent, and did I mention all that lobster?
Here's a little of what Love Exploring had to say about why Stonington was chosen.
Maine isn't short of coastal idylls and little Stonington is well worth a visit. A bridge links the town, at the southern tip of Deer Isle, to the mainland, but you'll find it hard to tear yourself away. It's a creative spot, packed with artists' studios and dinky galleries, and there's an opera house for live music and theatre too.
Stonington has everything one might be looking for in a community, from its vibrant art scene to its incredible setting. What isn't to love about this town?
It's exciting to see Stonington receive this recognition. It's a community that typically is overshadowed by the more popular tourist towns. Hopefully this – and articles like it – will open people's eyes to yet another beautiful Maine hamlet.
