It really isn't your imagination. Food prices here in Maine and across the nation continue to go up. According to Nerd Wallet, food prices have gone up from coast-to-coast about 3% in 2026 alone.

Which makes extending the money you do have all the more important. For many, that has turned them into bargain shoppers at the grocery store, looking for as many deals as they can find.

U.S. News and World Report just dropped a list of the 10 Cheapest Grocery Stores in the United States and there's great news for residents of Maine. 3 of the top 4 cheapest grocery stores in the country all have locations in Maine.

Aldi

Aldi sits as the second-cheapest grocery store in the nation on the U.S. News and World Report list.

Aldi's popularity has surged in just the last few years, prompting the German-based chain to open more stores throughout the country.

That includes the first Aldi location in Maine, located at the Pine Tree Shopping Center in Portland.

There is an industry belief that there will be more announced Aldi locations in Maine very soon.

Market Basket

Market Basket ranks as the third-cheapest grocery store in the country on the U.S. News and World Report list.

Market Basket is the only New England regional chain to make the list. Market Basket operates more than 90 stores in the region and 3 currently in Maine. They'll open a fourth in Scarborough, Maine, sometime this fall.

With new leadership taking over Market Basket, will the chain maintain its 'more for your dollar' motto?

Costco

Costco ranks as the fourth-cheapest grocery store in the country on the U.S. News and World Report list.

Costco isn't a traditional grocery store like Aldi and Market Basket but it does excel in offering low prices on a variety of products, including produce and meats.

The downside for many is that Costco is a membership club and everything is purchased in bulk. It can be ideal for families.

Costco only operates one location in Maine but another could be announced soon.
