Caribou, Maine, Named One of the Best ‘Destination Snow’ Cities in America
For many people who call Maine home year-round, there's a certain sense of dread that arrives when the days get shorter and the air gets colder. Winter has essentially arrived, which typically means snow isn't far behind.
There are plenty who live in Vacationland who truly enjoy the winter and snow that comes with it. Maine is home to some of the best ski mountains, snowmobile trails and cross country skiing destinations in the nation.
But what if all you really want is the snow? You don't want to hop on a pair of skis or rev up a snow machine. What if all you're really after is seeing piles and piles of snow in person? Apparently, Maine also has one of the best destinations in the country for just that too.
USA Today released a list of the 20 best destinations in America for snow. Caribou, Maine, is prominently featured on the list as a 'picturesque' place to visit, especially after a fresh snowfall. Good news for visitors, that happens quite often in Caribou.
Despite other cities in Maine seeing a dramatic downturn in snowfall in recent years, Caribou remains the little engine that could. The city averages just under 10 feet per winter in snowfall, and it's already seen multiple instances of snow this fall before winter officially arrives.
And there will be plenty more on the way throughout the winter and as locals know, probably plenty in the spring too. It does make for perfect snowmobiling, snowshoeing as well as other activities that Caribou has access to.
