Labrador Retriever Named the Most Popular Dog Breed in Maine

Ah yes, dogs—man’s best friend. Whether they’re named Fido, Rover, Bella, or Moose, it’s hard to imagine life without them.

If you’re a dog lover, you already understand why. Dogs are loyal, affectionate, protective, endlessly entertaining, and always happy to see you. They have an incredible ability to brighten even the toughest days and quickly become part of the family.

Simply put, dogs are about as close to perfect as it gets.

How Can Dogs Improve Your Health?

According to the American Kennel Club, dogs can lower stress, improve heart health, promote a more active lifestyle, reduce loneliness, and even lessen the threat of allergies.

As you can probably tell, I’ve been a dog owner my entire life,

and for me, it’s rescue dogs all the way! But that doesn’t mean I don’t have a soft spot for every breed out there.

With that in mind, I thought it would be fun to do a little research to figure out the most popular dog breed in Maine. Thankfully, the fine folks over at Visual Capitalist have already done the heavy lifting. The site analyzed hundreds of millions of insurance records to determine the top breed in every state.

What is Maine's Most Popular Dog Breed?

Maine’s top breed is an absolute classic. A true home run, one that should surprise nobody and also make us all proud to be Mainers because it’s such a perfect choice.

Why is that? Because Maine’s most popular breed is the Labrador retriever.

I mean, we’re talking about the perfect dog. Labs are wonderful family pets and great with kids. They’re affectionate, playful, energetic, and endlessly lovable. They’re also excellent working dogs, especially for hunters. They’re called “retrievers” for a reason. Oh, and they come in chocolate, which is just the cherry on top.

There’s just something uniquely special about Labs. Heck, half the time they feel more like humans than actual dogs. Now, if only they could talk.

Labs weren’t just Maine’s No. 1 pick, they actually led the nation, with 16 states having them as the most popular breed. Again, the least surprising thing ever.

However, finishing a close second was the Chihuahua, with 14 states having it as their most popular breed. The golden retriever finished a distant third.

Congrats to both Maine and the Lab, a match made in heaven and dog heaven (also known as the farm up north). It’s wonderful to know Mainers have great taste in dog breeds, among other things.

And now I need to go find a Lab to pet.
