One of Maine’s most legendary rivers is getting some well-deserved national recognition.

The folks over at the popular travel website Only in Your State took a deep dive into America’s rivers, highlighting some of the most iconic waterways flowing across this great country.

And with countless rivers stretching from coast to coast, making the cut was no easy feat. In fact, Only in Your State selected just 18 rivers for its prestigious list—and one of Maine’s very own earned a spot.

What Maine River Was Named One of America's Most Iconic Rivers?

This must have been a difficult article to create, considering the country is loaded with gorgeous and prominent rivers. However, Only in Your State ultimately decided on these 18, with one being right here in Maine. Say hello to one of the most iconic rivers in America: the Kennebec.

Ranging from Moosehead Lake to Merrymeeting Bay and eventually the Gulf of Maine, the Kennebec is one of the longest rivers in the Pine Tree State. The river spans a respectable 170 miles and features hydroelectric power stations and picturesque scenery. It also flows through some of Maine's cities, including Waterville, Skowhegan, and the state capital, Augusta.

What Makes the Kennebec River so Special?

The Kennebec is a weekend warrior's dream. The river has wonderful and challenging sections of whitewater, incredible canoeing, and fishing. Of course, it's also known for its remarkable beauty, especially in its northern region around The Forks and below Moosehead Lake.

Here’s a little from Only in Your State on why it selected the Kennebec River for its prestigious list. Here’s a hint: Yes, it’s mostly about the whitewater.

Known for its lush forests and stunning coastlines, Maine is also hiding a 170-long gem that's every bit as beautiful as the Pine Tree State itself. There's no better place for rafting and kayaking in the Northeast than the Kennebec River, which is known for its gentle rapids, calm waters, and stunning surroundings.

The best in the Northeast? That is quite a statement, for sure.
