Maine’s Best Colleges for 2026: A Strong Showing From Both Public and Private Schools
As 2025 approaches its end, it’s no surprise that the 2026 “best of” lists are already being compiled.
Best college lists are no exception, as the rankings are already hitting magazines and the World Wide Web. This includes a massive database from the research site Niche.com, which I’m pretty sure ranked every college that exists in America.
College Rankings Are Already Out for 2026
Niche’s college ranking database is an absolute monster. You could spend hours on the site utilizing any search categories you want.
The site uses a multitude of data points to create its rankings, including academics, faculty, student life, diversity, and safety, just to name a few. You can read more about the methodology here.
As I was perusing the database, I thought it would be fun to see what Niche.com has for Maine’s five best schools. The search came up with a solid five that are names we typically talk about in articles similar to this.
What are the Best Colleges in Maine?
So, here we go. These are the best colleges in Maine, according to Niche.com’s data analysis.
1. Bowdoin College – Brunswick
I feel like this one typically finds itself atop most lists for Maine. It is truly a certified powerhouse. Often referred to as one of the “Baby Ivies,” Bowdoin is recognized for its high graduation rate, strong job placement, and outstanding faculty recommendations.
2. Bates College – Lewiston
Coming in at number two is also our second “Baby Ivy.” It is particularly noted for student development, innovative learning environments, and its unique “Short Term” spring semester, which focuses on immersive, experiential learning.
3. Colby College – Waterville
And, to no surprise, in third place is the final “Baby Ivy.” Colby earned high marks for its academic opportunities, campus facilities, and strong post-graduation salary outcomes. I mean, I would hope so, considering you’re getting quite a high level of education.
4. University of Maine – Orono
Maine’s flagship public university sneaks into the Top 5. It scored well in student preparation and academic development and continues to invest in its campus infrastructure. It has been wonderful to watch this campus continue to improve.
5. Husson University – Bangor
Rounding out Maine’s Top 5 is a school just down the road from UMaine. Husson earned recognition for its low student-to-faculty ratio, strong job placement, and engaged student life.
I must say, this is a quality Top 5 with nice representation from both public and private institutions, as well as a mix of sizes and styles. I feel like the site’s analysis did quite a good job.

10. Unity Environmental College – New Gloucester
