Prediction for Maine, New Hampshire, Missed the Mark By Two Months

Did you think winter was over in New England? Probably not, since we know there's always a late season surprise always possible. But here's an even better question to ask when it comes down to it.

Outside of one storm that brought around one foot of snow to most Northern New England areas in January, and the snow and ice storm at the end of March as well as the one we're currently dealing with -- both technically in Spring -- did it feeling like winter ever really showed up to Maine or New Hampshire?

The interesting thing about living in New England is the weather is so unpredictable that even meteorologists in the area get it wrong sometimes -- to no fault of their own, by the way. It's not like they control the path that incoming storms take and if tracks change last minute -- they can only do the best they can with the information they're given and tracking.

But that said, the interesting thing is we actually invest more into what the Farmer's Almanac predicts for winter weather in areas like Maine and New Hampshire than the actual local weather reports at times.

Maine, New Hampshire, February Snow Prediction

While the Farmer's Almanac wasn't that far off with one of its predictions when it said in the second week of January, a massive snowstorm would hit the area (it happened more in the first week), from that point on, it's been absolutely dead wrong.

The Almanac predicted that we would get hit with a nor'easter during the second week of February, and while we've had a few inches drop here and there throughout the month, it's been relatively quiet and hardly even shovelable snow.

Maine Below Average Snow

In fact, according to a Valentine's Day post on X by WGME meteorologist Charlie Lopresti, as of mid-February, Portland, Maine, received a whopping total of 0" of snow, with not really any winter weather events of any significance in the forecast for the rest of the month.

Beyond that, according to a report by WGME, as of midway through February, snow totals were less than half of the usual average for the month.

Of course, with two big storms within the last two weeks (bringing a total just shy of FOUR FEET to the mountain areas), it's a case of better late than never for ski and snowboard enthusiasts.

Just when the winter haters thought it was safe to start embracing spring...
