Did You Know That Rapper Eminem Once Feuded With a New England Native?
It seems a bit random that Eminem would beef with someone from New England, but also, back in the day, Eminem pretty much feuded with everyone, so it's also not that much of a shocker.
MTV Total Request Live
Of course, leave it to an appearance on the OG version of the smash (at least, back then) MTV show Total Request Live (or TRL, if you had street cred), to kick off the beef.
During an episode of TRL that aired in 1999, Eminem was a scheduled guest and New England-native and A-list celebrity, Mark Wahlberg, was booked for a special surprise appearance, too.
According to a feature about Mark in Ask Men, before Mark joined Eminem and then-host Carson Daly on camera, a producer had mentioned to both Em and Carson that Mark would be appreciative if there was no mention of "Marky Mark" (Mark's early '90s rapper alter ego) at all.
Which, doesn't seem like a big deal, but according to a separate interview with Eminem in the book Whatever You Say I Am: The Life and Times of Eminem, as featured by The Things, there was a brief interaction between Em and Mark right before the show went live back on the air.
...he comes up and he’s standing on the side when we was off air, and he’s like, ‘What, is there supposed to be some [...] tension in here or something?’ I pretended like I don’t hear him [...].
Once live back on the air, while Eminem did in fact not call him Marky Mark as requested, he made a reference to his past career that did not sit well.
You can immediately see Mark shut down (and even mutter a word that begins with "a" and ends with "hole") under his breath as soon as Em makes the "stand around like a happy, fun bunch" reference (obviously a tip of the cap to Marky Mark and the Funky Bunch.)
A year later, Eminem followed up with a diss lyric directed to Mark in his 2000 song, Drug Ballad:
Back when Mark Wahlberg was Marky Mark / This is how we used to make the party start...
Eminem Mark Wahlberg Feud Ends
According to The Things, about a decade later, Mark and Eminem were both attending the same MTV event, and ended up hanging out afterwards. And, with a decade more of maturity under both their respective belts and pride put aside, the beef was squashed and all was well.
Mark went on to give Eminem credit in a 2018 episode of GQ's Actually Me, where he actually mentioned that he was an Em hater because Em is a better rapper than he is.
What are the odds Eminem is now a regular customer at his local Wahlburgers?
