You don't hear of too many movie premieres happening in Maine, but all the stars came out back in May of 1984 to celebrate a movie inspired by one of Maine's favorite sons, Stephen King.

Stephen King Movies

According to his official website, over 50 books written by Stephen King have been made into movies, sometimes even getting a reboot a couple of decades after the original release.

Some movies adapted onto the silver screen from a story written by Stephen include IT, Pet Sematary, The Green Mile, Stand By Me, Shawshank Redemption, and the movie that actually brought a 9-year-old Drew Barrymore to Bangor, Maine -- Firestarter.

Firestarter Movie Premiere

In what is now known as the Penobscot Theatre Company (or still referenced as the Bangor Opera House to locals), 40 years ago the red carpet was rolled out for the stars in Bangor for the official premiere of Stephen King's 8th book-to-movie adaptation, Firestarter.

Locals gathered for the official premiere and to take in the atmosphere, which included movie maker, Dino De Laurentiis, and Stephen King and his wife, Tabitha, all filing out of the same limo, shortly followed by the arrival of the firestarter herself, Drew Barrymore, pulling up in her own limo.

As if the movie premiere being in Maine itself wasn't enough to clamor over, people were also talking about one picture that made the rounds from the premiere that actually may have been a form of inception before we realized what inception truly was (with help from the movie that came out in 2010.)
