Artificial Intelligence is all about saving time for police officers, per a report put out by WGME Channel 13.

The report states Somerset Sheriff's Office are planning to implement AI into their cruiser and body cameras.

The AI cameras are created by Axon and designed to transcribe what's being said between deputies and the public, as well as typing it all out for their reports, the news station said. This could potentially save 15- 20 minutes of writing reports.

But even after AI transcribes everything, it is mandatory for the deputy to still review everything the program reported back, according to WGME.

Sheriff Dale Lancaster told the news station:

“Studies will show that visibility does work as a deterrent. Having deputies in the office typing reports, it takes them off the street."

Ideally the AI will save police time and allow them to focus on helping out and about.

Somerset County District Attorney, Maeghan Maloney told WGME that the body camera could help review any potential mistakes as well and that "we’re getting closer and closer to being able to put in front of the jury exactly what happened."

Forbes reported in an article on the number of businesses that are using AI in 2024 and how its used to help "Improve and perfect their operations."
It seems like this is just the tip of the iceberg for what's to come. What do you think about this new implementation the Somerset Sheriff's Office is using? Will more Maine police departments use them in the future?
