For many Maine families, hunting season is about a whole lot more than bringing home a deer. It's about tradition, making memories, and spending some quality time in the great outdoors.

And this weekend, it's the kids' turn!

According to the Maine Department of Inland Fisheries and Wildlife, Maine's 2026 Youth Deer Hunting Days are Friday, October 23, and Saturday, October 24.

That's right, young hunters across the Pine Tree State get TWO days dedicated to them before the regular firearms season kicks off.

The special youth hunt is open statewide, giving junior hunters an opportunity to head into the woods with an experienced adult and hopefully make some memories that'll last a lifetime.

Of course, there are a few things families should know before heading out.

Junior hunters must have a valid junior hunting license and be accompanied by a qualified supervisor.

Young hunters are permitted to harvest one antlered deer statewide. Antlerless deer may also be harvested without a permit in designated either-sex Wildlife Management Districts, so it's important to check the regulations for your hunting location.

And remember, harvesting a deer during the youth hunt generally counts toward the hunter's annual deer limit, although certain permit exceptions apply.

For those wondering about the rest of the season, Maine's resident-only firearms hunting day is Saturday, October 31, with the regular firearms season opening Monday, November 2.

Whether your young hunter is heading out for the very first time or has already developed a love for Maine's hunting traditions, this weekend is a great opportunity to get outside and enjoy everything our beautiful state has to offer.

You can find complete regulations, licensing information, and hunting season dates through the Maine Department of Inland Fisheries and Wildlife.
