Maine DOT Purchases Denny’s So They Can Demolish It and Build a New Roundabout

I think it's pretty safe to say that you could file this one in the "only in Maine" category.

You see, I tried to find instances of other states' Department of Transportation purchasing vintage retro diners only to tear them down and build horrific traffic patterns in their place.

But alas, I couldn't find anything quite like this.

According to an article published by WGME 13, the Maine Department of Transportation has officially purchased a former Denny's building in Maine.

No, they won't be cooking up Grand Slams while you wait in your 60s-style booth sipping chocolate milk. In fact, they won't be serving anything.

Instead, the MDOT will be taking an excavator to the old eatery and smashing away all the memories you shared there with your friends and family. I know, I'm making it seem much sadder than what it is. It's what I do. Now cry, damn it!

The former Denny's location, which sits on Congress Street in Portland, is going to be coming down to make may for another one of Maine's favorite traffic patterns, according to the news station.

You guessed it, a roundabout!

In all fairness, the roundabout, which is going to be installed in Portland's Libbytown neighborhood, is going to be installed in an attempt to overhaul the area and, hopefully, slow passing thru traffic down a little bit, according to WGME.

The news station reports that the goal of the Maine DOT is to bring Libbytown back to what it used to be before Interstate 295 was built in the area.

At this time, we're not exactly sure how long the project will take or when the demolition of the old Denny's will commence.
