For the last couple of years, downtown Augusta has been home to beautiful sculptures of sturgeon all along Water Street.

If you're not familiar with the sturgeon of the Kennebec, they are prehistoric fish that make their way up from the ocean each year and do fabulous belly flops above the water in hopes of attracting a mate.

Hopefully it works for them because I have done my fair share of belly flops over the years and it's garnered the attention of approximately 0 potential mates. Then again, I'm not a prehistoric fish. At least I don't think I am.

Anyway, I digress. According to an article published by the Kennebec Journal, 25 of these incredibly unique statues are currently on the auction block. The goal of the auction is to help support the Augusta Downtown Alliance and the work they do for the local business community.

Jeremy Ashlock, Director of the Augusta Downtown Alliance, told the Kennebec Journal in part,

“We’re excited. The feedback and support have been great. All the sturgeon have received bids, so every artist is going to receive compensation, so that’s good. This auction not only gives people a chance to own a piece of this extraordinary project, but also helps us continue the meaningful work that keeps our community thriving.”
