This story serves as a reminder that our law enforcement put themselves in harm's way every day in order to keep the population of Maine safe.

According to a press release from the Maine Department of Public Safety, a Maine State Trooper shot and killed a domestic violence suspect during a Friday, June 7, incident in Hiram, Maine.

Maine State Trooper Zachary Fancy responded to the scene of a possible domestic violence incident.  As Trooper Fancy entered the residence, he encountered a man who reportedly aimed a firearm at him.  Fancy fired his weapon, hitting the man.

The man was pronounced dead at the scene.

The deceased's name has not been released, pending notification of his next of kin.

The press release goes on to say:

The Office of the Attorney General will investigate the law enforcement use of force and the Maine State Police Major Crimes South will complete a criminal investigation. Trooper Fancy is being placed on administrative leave which is standard practice in any officer-involved shooting in Maine.

The press release does not indicate if there were other people in the home at the time of the incident, nor if there were others involved.

The Maine State Police was formed in 1921.  Unlike most other Maine law enforcement agencies, the Maine State Police have jurisdiction across the entirety of the state.

In addition to the troopers that patrol Maine's highways and towns, the organization has several specialized units, like the tactical team and major crimes unit.
