Here’s When Maine Can Expect Its Last Snowfall of the Winter
Even though we had been warned that this winter was going to be strange, it still did not prepare us for the weird weather we have been having.
In late summer, meteorologists across the region warned us that, because of the return of El Nino, we were likely to have a wild winter. Most predicted that one of two things would happen. They believed that we were either going to get a very snowy winter where we saw a decent-sized storm every few days, or we were going to have a warm and wet winter.
So far, it looks like we are getting the latter.
In addition to December's 'Grinch' storm, which brought warm temperatures and lots of rain to New England, we have had very few snowstorms. And because it has been so warm, any snow that falls melts almost immediately.
As it is only February, it is still possible that we could still see some traditional winter weather, but most people don't feel that's going to happen. But, what if we do end up seeing a more normal end to the winter?
When will Maine see its last snowfall of the winter?
Since it is only February, there is a good chance that we are going to have a few more snowstorms. When are we going to get the last of the season?
Of course, no one knows, but we can make an educated guess based on previous winters.
According to How Much Will It Snow, we typically get our last snowfall of the season at the end of March or the beginning of April. In 2023, we got our last snow on March 31, and in 2022, it was on March 30. In 2021, Central Maine saw its last snowfall on April 16.
The only real recent deviation was in 2020, when we got our last snowstorm on May 9. But, then again, 2020 was messed up, so that late snowfall makes sense.
Even though I have no training as a meteorologist, I do watch a lot of TV and spend a lot of time on social media. Sometimes, I watch videos and read articles about the weather. So, my completely uneducated guess is that we will get our last snowfall of the winter on March 27.
What is your opinion about this winter? Are you happy that it has been mild, are you concerned about climate change, or are you just annoyed that there has not been enough snow for you to go snowmobiling?
