The Ultimate American Road Trip Begins in This Tiny Maine Town
Even though the nation’s interstate system makes driving from place to place fairly easy, we can all agree that the best road trips are taken on America’s rural routes.
Instead of taking you around, or over, towns and cities, America’s routes generally take drivers directly through the country’s these municipalities. In some cases, these routes become small town Main Streets.
Additionally, these roads take drivers past iconic historic landmarks, to amazing locally-owned businesses, and give drivers a chance to see some of our country’s best scenic vistas.
There really is nothing like a drive on America’s rural routes.
A Trip Down Historic Route 1
These days, one can easily travel the entire length of the East Coast by driving the I-95. The road, which starts in Houlton, Maine, ends in Tampa, Florida. With speed limits in excess of 60 MPH, the average person can drive from Maine to Florida in just a few days.
In the days before Interstate 95 was completed, the best way to get from Maine to Florida was via US Route 1.
The 2,369 mile road starts in the Aroostook County town of Fort Kent, Maine. Fort Kent is really small. Really, really small. The town has a population of only 4,000! U.S. Route 1 ends in the tourist hotspot of Key West, Florida.
Driving the length of Route 1 is a true adventure that everyone should do at least once in their life. The road takes drivers down the rugged coast of Maine, through Portsmouth, through the center of Boston, down the coast of Rhode Island & Connecticut, and through several other historic cities including Philadelphia.
This travel guide will give you some great suggestions of places to stop along the way.
