Imagine walking inside a real whale. That is the idea behind “Chunk,” a life-size inflatable humpback whale that travels to schools, libraries, and community events.

The program is led by Jessica Woodend, an award-winning wildlife educator who teaches people of all ages about ocean life in a fun and memorable way. Up to 20 kids or 15 adults can explore Chunk at one time, making it a great group experience.

Chunk is based on a real humpback whale that lived in the Gulf of Maine. The real Chunk got her name because a piece of her dorsal fin was missing. Marine researchers knew her well. She was about 40 feet long and around 10 years old.

Sadly, in the summer of 2024, she became trapped in fishing nets near Cape Elizabeth, Maine. She did not survive, and her story shows how dangerous human activities can be for whales and other sea creatures.

The inflatable Chunk helps keep her memory alive. When people step inside the whale model, they can learn about whale anatomy, how whales eat, how they communicate, and why they migrate. Visitors also learn about the problems whales face, such as pollution and tangled fishing gear. The experience is designed to match school science standards, but it feels more like an adventure than a lesson.

Chunk’s story encourages kids and adults to think about how their choices affect the ocean. By understanding how special and fragile marine animals are, people leave the program inspired to protect our oceans. This giant inflatable whale makes science feel real and reminds everyone that the ocean needs our help.
