And then there were three...

The Holy Donut on Minot Avenue in Auburn will close its doors forever. The co-owner and CEO of Holy Donut, Jeff Buckwalter, said in a press release,

The timing just wasn’t right for our entry into the Auburn market. The City rolled out the red carpet for us, and we’re very grateful for their support. But since we’re not where we expected we would be by now, we simply can’t justify keeping this storefront open.

You can blame the pandemic for once again ruining a perfectly wonderful establishment. Donuts are meant for sharing. You grab a dozen for the office or sneak one for yourself on your way to work. When they opened the Holy Donuts in January of 2021, it looked like we had turned the corner and were going to get back to a somewhat normal routine. We did not.

Buckwalter says that their number one priority is taking care of the employees who will soon find themselves without a job. He will see if it makes sense for them to be at other locations or another job in the Lewiston/Auburn area. They are also working to see who they can get into that location so that another business can start.

Holy Donut's three other locations, the original Park Avenue shop in Portland, the drive-thru on Rte. 1 in Scarborough, and the new Portland Holy Donut on Commercial St. – are doing well and there are no plans to close any of those.

Later this spring or in early summer, Holy Donut will open their Arundel campus and take some of the pressure off of the Scarborough location. They had to convert Scarborough's dining room into production, so Scarborough - you are getting your dining room back! This Arundel Holy Donut will have a drive-thru and walk-up retail store and will be where a lot of research and production happens.

There is no date for the last day they will be open. Long live the potato donut!
