Phone scams

Without a doubt, we've all run into this scenario way too often before where an unknown number calls our cell phone number and either mentions trying to reach us about our car's extended warranty or mentions how they're with the IRS, we've committed tax fraud and will be sentenced to jail if we don't send them $1,000 worth of gift cards.

And generally the conversation doesn't even get that far because who even picks up a number that's not saved to their phone these days, anyway?

That said, scammers have tried to get smarter with how they operate and try to rock their phishing scams and are now sending text messages to try and trick us into either clicking on something where they can swipe our personal info, or just straight up asking for money. And they do it in some wonky ways lately, too. For example, what recently happened to a Nashua, New Hampshire man.

Pretending to text the wrong number

The random afternoon text that Sopee Preap received seemed to be meant for a girl/woman named Liliana, who the texter messaged mentioning she lost her earring in Liliana's car. Seemed innocent enough, which is why Sopee's response was the usual, "Hey, think you have the wrong number."

After sending Sopee an apology, the texter then decided to try and tickle the heart strings and suggest that maybe the wrong number text was fate, and so began the journey to try and get some personal information about Sopee. Thankfully for him and his bank accounts, he immediately saw right through the scam and offered up a fake name and location in return.

Making it even more obvious that this was a text message scam (and quite possibly even a text bot) by referring to his last name as his first, "Lin" went on to try and shoot her shot at a "genuine friendship" by suggesting they exchange pictures with each other. Twice. And then sending a selfie that almost looks like it's from a very high-quality Sims-type game (there's something about the eyes that seems virtual instead of real.)

And that's when Sopee set himself up to go in for the kill against "Lin," commenting on wearing a Polo-brand shirt and then flipping the text phishing/money-seeking scam around on her in an epically hilarious way.

Needless to say, Sopee never received a response after that. But we certainly wish Marquis de La Roy and his working 3-year-old daughter luck on his upcoming double ACL surgery!
