A fire on the roof on the site of the Pentucket Regional High School building project in West Newbury that sent thick black smoke into the sky was quickly brought under control on Friday afternoon.

West Newbury Fire Chief Michael Dwyer said the fire was brought under control within a half hour of the arrival of fire crews. The Newburyport Fire Department, the Georgetown Fire Department and Atlantic Ambulance. Crews from the Newbury Fire Department and the Merrimac Fire Department provided station coverage.

“This situation could have ended a lot worse. We appreciate the quick response by the workers who put out the initial flames, and thank the West Newbury Fire Department and the other departments for responding so quickly to secure the scene,” Superintendent Dr. Justin Bartholomew said.

The fire is not considered suspicious, according to the Chief, and will not delay work on the building or add costs to the project. According to the project website the building should be complete in the spring and summer of 2022 with grades 7-12 scheduled to move into the new building in the fall of 2022.
