When was the first time you had gelato? It seems like it would be a memorable occasion, considering how divine the frozen treat is.

For this writer, her first gelato experience was with a friend in Boston, Massachusetts. On that fateful day, the two of us established a gelato tradition. If we're hanging out and there's a place serving gelato nearby, you'd best believe we're stopping by.

But what even is gelato, and how is it different from ice cream?

According to the Food Network, the main category distinguishing gelato from ice cream is the ingredients:

"While both gelato and ice cream contain cream, milk and sugar, there are differences, too. Authentic gelato uses more milk and less cream than ice cream and generally doesn’t use egg yolks, which are a common ingredient in ice cream...USDA regulations state that ice cream must contain at least 10 percent butterfat. Mot brands have between 14 and 25 percent. Meanwhile, Italian gelato includes only about 4 to 9 percent fat."

People who consume both ice cream and gelato can vouch for the fact that although both are amazing, gelato tastes more rich and dense than ice cream.

Gelato is also served in little cups with these cute and tiny little spoons. You can't go wrong with that.
