Cars Can’t Stop Crashing Into One Yellow Pole at the Auburn, Maine, Walmart
If you visit the Walmart in Auburn on a regular basis, there's a good chance you've seen a yellow pole in the parking lot that looks like it's seen better days. It may be tilted to one side, the yellow paint covered in black marks or flaking off altogether. It's not caused by frost heaves or changes in the weather though. This yellow pole seems to manage to go toe to toe with cars in the parking lot and it wins just about every time.
Here's the pole we're talking about. It's not the only one to be hit, but it seems to have kissed or flat out punched the front ends of the most cars.
We get it. Accidents happen, but here in the Auburn Walmart parking lot, they happen a lot. One Walmart employee I spoke with said someone hits the yellow pole around two to three times a month. Most of the collisions are just fender benders, but some do big damage.
Why are so many people hitting the yellow pole? There's a lot of chatter on Facebook every time it happens, and people always seem to ask the question, "How do you not see a bright yellow pole?"
Brandi Collins left a post on my Facebook page explaining how she hit it. "I hit one years ago with my Honda Accord!!" she wrote. "Straight on! It was dark and one of those winter nights where my windows were covered with dry salt water, making it harder to see unfortunately!!"
What can be done about this yellow pole hitting epidemic? Not much really. Drivers just have to be really careful. Let these photos below be a reminder to you when visiting the Auburn Walmart to drive slow and carefully so accidents like these don't happen to you.
