
New Emergency Shelter Gives Hope to Hundreds Facing Homelessness in Maine
A new emergency shelter has opened in Brunswick, Maine, according to WGME.
The timing couldn't be better for folks that are struggling right now. As we all know Maine weather in the winter seasons is beyond harsh and a new expanded shelter in Brunswick is giving a lot of people much relief.
The shelter is run by Tedford Housing, located on Thomas Point Road and will replace the existing facility in town. The new and bigger building spans more than 17,000 square feet and will be able to serve around 80 more people each year.
Brunswick’s New Emergency Shelter Brings Hope and Relief
As per the article, the space will include wings for both family and adults and because this is such a big space, they will be able to increase their capacity by 60 percent.
Executive Director Andrew Lardie told WGME,
"It just offer a higher quality of experience for both the guests and staff so for example making sure people don't have to climb to the second flight of stairs and have people be on the top bunk to be in order to accept a bed because that doesn't work for everyone so this new building is 100% ADA accessible,”
How Many Homeless People are in The State of Maine
According to the most recent data report, 2,413 people in Maine as of January of 2025 were experiencing homelessness. There has been a drop of about 10% since from the previous year.

Last year the Tedford Housing was able to help around 1,200 people that were homeless in their four county service area and this includes around 600 children, as per WGME.
With this new and expanded shelter in Brunswick they are hoping to offer a place of peace, respite, and renewal to their guests.
