Ahoy! Step Aboard The Most Unique Restaurant In Maine
In recent years, Maine has become a food paradise. Yes, we have always been known for our amazing seafood - white fish, clams, scallops, and lobster (of course!). But, now we are known for having some of the best restaurants in the east. Not just in Portland, either. Nearly every town has at least a few really good restaurants.
Given the number of famous, and wealthy, people who have homes in the area, it should not be much of a surprise that Kennebunkport has a lot of amazing restaurants. One of those restaurants gives diners the experience of dining on an old school sailing ship - and you don't even need to be a member of the crew!
The Spirit Restaurant is located on board the Spirit of Massachusetts, a 125 foot schooner docked on the Kennebunk River in Kennebunkport.
According to their website, the schooner was launched from Massachusetts' Charleston Naval Yard in 1984. For several decades she served as a goodwill ambassador for the Commonwealth of Massachusetts while sailing the globe as an educational ship.
They specialize in small plates that are scratch made every day. The menu is always changing, but currently features oysters, lobster corn chowder, jerk chicken skewers, and tomato watermelon salad.
In a normal year, they are open May through October. Typically, they are open Thursday through Sunday from 11:30 AM to 8:30 PM. Find The Spirit on 4 Western Avenue in Kennebunkport.
And, if you are looking for a unique place to hold a corporate event or wedding reception, they are capable of hosting events on the schooner or on the pier.
