The trip to the summit of Mount Cadillac will be a little different this season and more expensive as well, as a $6 reservation fee has been implemented.

Required parking reservations to gain access to the Summit Road will begin to be taken this Thursday, April 1st, at 10 a.m.  The National Park Service has approved the $6 fee, and you can set up your reservation at Recreation.Gov.  Reservations will be set between May 26 and October 19.

Vehicle reservations are not required for other sections of Acadia National Park, including the Park Loop Road and Sand Beach.  Of course you can still access the summit of Cadillac without a parking reservation if you want to walk, hike or bike up.  The Island Explorer Bus Service will not be taking passengers to the summit this year.

There are two types of reservations for the three mile-long Summit Road, Sunrise and Daytime, and each has an "entry window" to abide by.  The entry window for Sunrise is two hours in length, and the one for Daytime is 30 minutes in length.  There is no limit to the length of time that your vehicle may be parked.

Of course you'll need a Park entry pass as well.

Acadia National Park on Mount Desert Island is one of the more popular National Parks within the country, and now with 3.5 million visitors per year things can get congested very quickly.  The narrow two-lane Summit Road has closed numerous times over the past few years because of the traffic flow and the lack of parking.
