I don't know if you've noticed, but housing prices seem to be rapidly rising here in Portland since I first moved here some fifteen years ago. Well if not, allow me to enlighten you. Portland apartments are SUPER expensive! In preparation for my move closer to Portland this fall, I've been browsing craigslist and from what I've gathered, I can afford... a closet.

In case you think, "Oh Anna, don't exaggerate..." I have proof! I've found the three most expensive rental apartments in Portland, and what's more, one of the listings doesn't even have pictures of the finished renovations! I'm starting to wonder if my friends who are all buying houses have a better idea, because at this rate, I might have to reconsider that RV idea.

1. 1700 sq foot Penthouse on East End - $3500 per month

2bd/2ba Furnished Top Floor Condo with Roof Deck. Located in the East End, this condo has it all. Unimpeded views N/S/E/and West from the highest floor of the highest street in the City; giving the place a lot of light all day long from 22 windows. Every sunrise and sunset is clearly visible from the place all year round. There is a large roof deck which is a wonderful outdoor space in the summer with panoramic views of the Bay, City of Portland & Mt Washington. Condo has hardwood floors, updated kitchen, open space, off-street parking. No Pets. Tenant pays all utilities. 2 Parking Spaces Off Street. Tenant also has use of a garden in the side yard."

Ok, I get it. It's furnished and it's super fancy with a deck and an incredible view. But with great space, comes great responsibility. i.e. no pets and you pay ALL the utilities. This on top of the thirty five HUNDRED dollar monthly rent! Well... at least you can use the side garden from your top floor condo...

2. Luxury Condo at 7 Maple Street - $3500 per month

Located in The Old Port, this 2BR/2BA Condo is a modern, luxurious home on top of the new Marriott Hotel on Commercial Street. You can find yourself using new Viking appliances in a beautiful kitchen and relaxing by a gas fireplace. The Condo offers a separate entrance from the hotel, but provides you with access to the pool and fitness center. Enjoy Tiqa Restaurant, located directly below you on the ground floor, and take advantage of the quick walk to the heart of Downtown Portland. All utitlities are included and it comes with one reserved parking space."

Well at least this one has the decency to include all the utilities in their ridiculously overpriced monthly rent. And I guess it's kind of cool to have a pool and fitness center on site AND a restaurant on the ground floor. In terms of price for what you get, I suppose it's not too shabby. Even still, thirty-five-HUNDRED-dollars a month... just... wow...

3. Newly Renovated 2 Bedroom 2 Bath in Portland's West End - $2500

Be the first to enjoy this sophisticated, bright and airy first floor 2 Bedroom 2 Bath unit in the desirable West End. Enjoy the upscale features including hardwood floors, granite countertops, custom kitchen and bath cabinetry, gas range, and stainless appliances. Unit includes a full size stackable washer/dryer, efficient heat/air conditioning units, energy efficient windows and one dedicated off-street parking space. Soaring ceilings and oversized windows allow for beautiful natural sunlight throughout the unit. Tenant is responsible for the following utilities: Heat, Electric, Cable, Internet."

So what you're saying is I'm responsible for all the utilities except hot water? Ok... Also, bold choice to post photos of the space not yet finished. I applaud your confidence.

Well, there you have it! The three most expensive apartments in Portland, Maine. If anybody needs me, I'll just be over here building a treehouse...
