Road Trip to Salem, Massachusetts [Photos]
It's that time of year when we need a change of scenery. Just a quick day trip is enough to give us a respite from seeing the same piles of snow at the end of the driveway. Salem, Massachusetts has plenty to do for a day or weekend. It has been years since I had spent any time in Salem. Going to the House of Seven Gables as a kid still sticks in my mind as a really cool adventure. My husband had never been there, so we decided to take a road trip to Salem.
Salem is a little city that embraces it's witchcraft trial history with psychic readings, witch museums and a memorial to those executed during the trials. I recently found that I am descended from one of those hung during the trials, Samuel Wardwell. So, I made a special stop at his memorial.
Salem is a town rich in shipping and colonial history. If you love maritime history, a stop at the Salem Maritime National Historic Site is a must. The kids will love it too. There are stops along the wharf out to the lighthouse for them to play and learn.
With it's secret staircase, the House of Seven Gables is on the list of places to visit. Salem born author Nathaniel Hawthorne wrote a novel based on the family home.
Ancient cemeteries, the Peabody Essex Museum and colonial sites will easily keep you busy for an interesting day trip or weekend.
