It was open house this weekend at the Brewster Mansion in Bar Mills, Maine.  It was a rare opportunity to see the recently renovated home of early American portrait artist John Brewster. The privately owned home was open to the public as a fund raiser for the Buxton-Hollis Historical Society.  The last time it was open to the public was 10 years ago. The home is now listed on the National Register of Historic Places. John Brewster was a deaf itinerant painter who painted  well to do New England families.  Many of his portraits hang in major art museums. The federalist home has been beautifully restored and houses a spectacular array of art work, antiques and a fine doll collection.  The 5 acre estate is a peaceful oasis lovingly maintained by the home's owners.
