According to WGME, research done by Experian shows that Mainers are better with handling their credit cards than many other Americans.

Americans love their credit cards because even if you pay them off every month, you still get rewards for using them. To rack up points for travel and other stuff, some people use their credit cards for everything from gas to groceries and their kid's school lunch program.

Why are Mainers better with their credit card than other states? First of all, we have a lot of older folks living here and they are less risky with finances. Secondly, we are raised to be conservative with our money. A lot of us were raised without using credit. We saved up cash to get what we wanted.

Maine happens to be the state where credit card debt has increased the least. Here are the top five:

  1. Maine
  2. Vermont
  3. Arkansas
  4. West Virginia
  5. New Hampshire

The top five states battling with the highest amount of credit are:

  1. Nevada
  2. Florida
  3. Washington, D.C.
  4. South Carolina
  5. Georgia
