The Maine Secretary of State's Office announced today that starting in July 2019, Mainers will be able to select from three options for their gender identification. Currently, only "M" and "F" options are available. Starting next year, a third "X" option will be available.

Several Maine news organizations have reported on the news, and the reaction across social media has been particularly polarized. Comments across multiple news sites range from those excited for what they call a progressive step forward, to others who slam the regulatory change as catering to those with "mental illness."
