After successful turns at documentaries on Chris Farley and John F. Kennedy, Jr., Spike is turning its attention to another star that was taken from the world far too early.

I Am Heath Ledger promises an inside look at the life of the actor who broke hearts in films like 10 Things I Hate About You, Brokeback Mountain and A Knight's Tale, and defied all expectations in his role as the Joker in The Dark Knight. No matter where or when you became a fan of the Australian actor, this first trailer will remind you just what made Heath Ledger such an icon before his tragic overdose in 2008.

The first trailer for the documentary gives us but a hint of what to expect from I Am Heath Ledger, which will mix interviews with the likes of director Ang Lee, Ledger's family, and other actors like Naomi Watts, Ben Mendelsohn and more, with footage from Ledger's own camera archives. It's a bit eerie being so close to the star in his home movies, as catching him smiling or winking at us from beyond the veil is likely as intimate a look as the world at large will ever get at the Aussie.

"Even as a supporting actor he will steal the whole show," Ang Lee said. "That's the power of Heath Ledger." The actor's allure was undeniable, and his more interesting and captivating roles in the years immediately before The Dark Knight showed just how much talent he had, even if we never truly got to see it realized in full.

I Am Heath Ledger will premiere at the Tribeca Film Festival on April 23, and will begin a limited theater run on May 3. Spike will debut the documentary on its television network on May 17.
