Need a great idea for Summer vaca? How about FREE?! Well you can add this one to your 2014 Family Summer bucket list.

DOUGLAS MTN- Located near Sebago Lake, this is a hike the whole family can do. My BFF and I walked the longer trail to the summit approx 2.5 miles. It was quite steep the way we went which made us both feel a bit out of shape at times but when we took another route down we found a much quicker less steep route. The trails are well maintained and marked but you definitely have to do some balancing. It was really cool reaching the summit and I saw a ton of kids there and even dogs, so the entire family really can enjoy this trip together. I would recommend this for 8 plus. Perhaps a Summer boy/girl scout badge?

This picture was taken at summit on the start of decent. It starts off as dirt and quickly changes to rock which can be slippery. There is a sign at the base saying $3.00 for parking but no one was there to collect money and there was no spot I could see to leave it. There is no charge to climb and the park closes at 6 pm. You will want to block off at least 2 hours for the hike. That will give you some extra time to look around and stop along the way. Bringing a picnic is definitely feasible. BRING BUG SPRAY!!!

Here's the old sign in box from ages ago. The Douglas family actually left the Mountain to the town so everyone could enjoy it's beauty. We were able to see Mt. Washington clearly from the tower and Sebago Lake even Portland in the distance.

At the Summit, on a clear day, you can get a beautiful picture of Sebago Lake like this. I took this shot from the top of the tower which the owner built for the best views. It's kid friendly and I won't include a picture of it in case you want to be surprised at what the tower looks like at the top.

Directions: In Sebago, just Follow Rt 107 to Douglas Mountain Road. Follow the signs. It will be on your left.

It was so cool, there was enough signal to see where we were on "Google Earth."

Bring a picnic, plenty of water, your hiking boots or a good pair of sneaks and get the kids away from the X-Box for some nice Maine fresh air and exercise. They will feel great when they accomplish their climb. Great confidence and team builder activity. #FREESUMMERFUN
