Over vacation, I had the unique opportunity to explore Placentia Island off the coast of Mount Desert Island, Maine. Historian Peter Blanchard lead the tour and spoke about past inhabitants of the 500 acre island.

A number of families lived on Placentia Island.  Nan & Art Kellam were the last to inhabit the island. The Mount Desert Historical Society offered unique tours of the island to highlight their exhibit on the Kellams. The tours were so popular, the historical society is considering doing it again in July 2015.  It was a beautiful ride from Bass Harbor on the Osprey, a College of the Atlantic vessel. Once, we all gathered on the shore of Placentia, we hiked to the old foundation of the Kellam's home.  We learned about their decades on the island.  They weathered all the seasons on Placentia.  Toward the end of their lives, they worked with the Nature Conservancy to preserve the island. The land is now part of the Conservancy with limited use. If given the opportunity to visit the island, I recommend taking advantage of the chance. You may not want to leave.
