UPDATED, 10:20 a.m.: A baby seal that was rescued in Portland's Back Cove this week suffered respiratory problems and was euthanized, according to the Portland Press Herald.

The daily newspaper reported on Thursday the Marine Mammals of Maine, a nonprofit response-and-rescue group based in Boothbay, determined that because it was considered too sick to be transported to an out-of-state rehab facility, the seal pup had to be put down.

Earlier story: Came across a baby seal pup as we were walking around the Back Cove. Here's how it went down.

Was out for my daily exercise after work. Ironically and luckily I was walking with my friend Patsy Murphy who is the Executive Director of The Animal Refuge League of Greater Portland.

We were just chirpin away when we saw a couple of people looking into the water right around the part where the of ramp from I-295 hits the Franklin Arterial exit.

We all noticed a baby seal struggling with its left fin. Patsy jumped on the phone called her people as I called my friend Game Warden Pete Herring and Katie Thompson from WMTW Ch 8.

Between all of our frantic "who should we call?" and realizing the University of New England had shut down it's rehab center we finally got someone from the Marine Mammals of Maine to show up and take over.

As of this time it looked like the plan is to take the pup down to the Mystic Aquarium.

Here's Patsy Murphy and Liz Lord from the Animal Refuge League of Greater Portland. The first thing Patsy did was call her staff to assist and we all waited for the people from the Marine Mammals of Maine to show. She has the best staff in the world! They'll save anything!!!
