Businesses That Follow/Unfollow Play A Dangerous Game

Here’s why: Many businesses try to get you to follow them on social media by following you. The moment you do, they unfollow you in order to ramp up their numbers. Someone who knows nothing about the psychology of rejection told these companies they should have a higher percentage of followers than the total of people they are following in order to make their organization more appealing. Yes, it’s a silly numbers game.
What these companies fail to realize is the power of rejection is hurting their business relationships and bottom line. Most people do have apps to track their unfollowers, so they get notifications when this happens. The simple act of unfollowing or unfriending someone can provoke these strong feelings of rejection that people don’t easily forget. It’s unlikely someone will buy your product or service after you’ve spurned him or her on social media.
If you don’t want to see someone’s content in your Twitter feed, do this instead: Mute them. Instagram doesn’t have this feature yet, but it may in the future.
As a business, it’s important to nurture your relationships with your customers. If you don’t know this, perhaps it’s time to rethink your profession.
