80 years ago aviator Amelia Earhart made a trip to Maine. She had rock star status. People loved and followed her religiously. Her visit is being marked in Augusta on Saturday, August 2, 2014 10 to 3 with free flights for women.

Amelia made a trip to Maine August 12-14, 1934.  The visit would be 3 years before she disappeared. A group of Maine aviation enthusiasts are marking her trip to Maine with the "Spirit of Amelia Commemoration" event at the Augusta State Airport. Maine Aviation Historical Society has designed a special traveling exhibit to commemorate Amelia Earhart's tour of Maine 80 years ago. She visited the Bangor, Waterville and Augusta airports to research routes for the Boston and Maine Airways, of which she was vice president. Katahdin Wings will be on hand to share information about The 99s, aviation opportunities and education and in much the same way Amelia did - encourage women to get involved with aviation.
